Banana Nutella “Ice Cream”

My fascination with eating frozen pureed fruit instead of ice cream started about a decade ago with various berries, but my latest project has been using bananas.  I first saw this idea on one of those infomercials that are on in the middle of the night they had a special machine that was made just for turning bananas into soft serve.  I have a machine that works great for that too and it’s called a food processor.  Haha!  OK, on with the productive part of my story.  I know I have talked about trying to use bananas before they go bad in another posting, but here I was again, a bunch of bananas that I didn’t have time to eat.  I decided to give this a shot, but I didn’t want plain bananas.  If I was going to fully trick myself into thinking that this is an indulgent treat, I would also need the help of a little chocolate.  I chose to use nutella, but regular cocoa powder or peanut butter would both be amazing flavor combinations.  My son and I enjoyed a big bowl of bananas tonight for dessert and neither one of use missed the real thing!

 

Banana Nutella “Ice Cream”

  • 4 large ripe bananas, not over ripe
  • 1/3 cup hazelnut chocolate spread, or Nutella

Directions:

Peel and cut bananas into 1.5 inch pieces.  Place on sheet tray and freeze for 1-2 hours or until frozen solid.  Remove from the freezer and place in the food processor.  Pulse a few times to start breaking them down and scrape down the sides of the bowl.  Puree for 1 minute or until almost smooth.  Add nutella.  Puree for another 30 seconds or until completely smooth.  Remove banana mixture from processor bowl and place in freezer safe container.  Freeze for 1 hour or until ready to serve.  Mixture will remain slightly soft, perfect for serving or grabbing a spoonful!  Enjoy!
